California Road Trippin’: Roasted Garlic Ice Cream

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

You can’t call yourself a true garlic lover until you’re daring enough to try garlic ice cream…and like it. I fell in love with garlic ice cream back in 2006 at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, one of the largest food festivals in the United States with food, drinks, arts & crafts and live entertainment.

Garlic ice cream is really an acquired taste that people often find difficult to describe.  It’s cool, smooth, and creamy (like all good ice cream should be), but it also uniquely combines a sweet vanilla flavor with a rich, buttery garlic flavor. Whatever the exact flavor is, it grew on me.

I just had to attempt to recreate my beloved garlic ice cream from Gilroy at home. The result? Even better than the original! If you have an ice cream machine and are adventurous enough, try my roasted garlic ice cream recipe at Small Kitchen College.

And for those of you who are road trippin’ down the California coast around July 27th, 28th, or 29th, you must stop by Gilroy, the “Garlic Capital of the World,” and try the infamous garlic ice cream!

Avocados: They’re Not Just for Guacamole!

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

love avocados. With their rich, smooth and buttery consistency, I’m rendered helpless when it comes to resisting them! I’m not surprised that they’re known as “butter fruit” to many cultures. My fondness of this exotic fruit is legendary at parties I’ve thrown, where my homemade guacamole is the first thing to disappear.

Guacamole isn’t the only thing I’ve made to acclaim with avocados. I like to use them in all types of recipes, not only for their flavor, but also their nutritional value. Mayonnaise, butter and eggs can all be subbed out, avocados subbed in instead. Try avocados in drinks, ice cream, pasta sauces, and even cupcakes. The Choco-Cado Cupcakes pictured above were the moistest and fluffiest cupcakes I’ve ever eaten. Don’t doubt the avocado, folks – it’s got magical powers!

For creative uses (and recipes!) for avocados, check out my latest post over at Small Kitchen College!

When Cupcake Met Ice Cream

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Is there really any better way to start off summer than by making a dessert that combines two favorites: cupcakes and ice cream? I think not! Cupcake Project and Scoopalicious are holding an Ice Cream Cupcake Contest in which the winner gets a whole library of baking cookbooks. So what’s my concoction? PB&Bean Cuppies with PB Swirl Ice Cream: chocolate black bean cupcakes filled with a mini scoop of peanut butter swirl ice cream topped with peanut butter frosting, honey roasted peanuts and a tiny peanut butter cup. Mmmm! (more…)
