We are wrapping up the 4th episode of Bitchen in the Kitchen and I am proud to see the web series really starting to come together now. The first episode will be out in just 2 days! I battle In-N-Out to create a healthier and tastier alternative of their Animal Style cheeseburger in less time. Will my Shroom Ba Da Boom Burger beat the infamous Animal Style cheeseburger? You’ll have to find out on May 2.

Shroom Ba Da Boom Burger’s nutrition vs. In-N-Out’s lack of nutrition:

Mushrooms

  • Make the burger patty extra juicy
  • High in iron
  • High in potassium
  • High in fiber that lowers cholesterol

Ground turkey vs. ground beef

  • Better source of lean protein
  • Lower in fat
  • High in vitamin B

Cheddar cheese vs. American “cheese”

  • High in protein
  • High in iron
  • High in zinc
  • High in potassium
  • Low in lactose (so lactose intolerants can still get their nutrients!)

Guacamole vs. Thousand Island dressing

  • High in monounsaturated fat (“good” fat that lowers cholesterol)
  • High in vitamin B6 and folic acid
  • Rich in antioxidants

Honey Wheat bun vs. white bun

  • High in fiber (makes you fuller much faster!)
  • Lower glycemic index (keeps blood sugars low)

Micro greens vs. lettuce

  • High levels of concentrated active compounds
  • High in vitamins A, B, C, E and K
  • High in calcium
  • High in potassium
  • High in iron

Cucumbers vs. pickles

  • High in vitamin C
  • High in potassium
  • No added sodium!


Shroom Ba Da Boom Burger
Makes 1 burger

2 ounces cremini mushrooms
1 garlic clove
2 tbsp Trader Joe’s diced onion
Extra virgin olive oil spray
¼ pound ground turkey
1 tsp sea salt
Fresh ground pepper
Honey whole wheat bun
Optional fix-ins: Cheddar cheese slice, Trader Joe’s Avocado’s number guacamole, micro greens, red onion slices, tomato slice, cucumber slices

Place mushrooms, garlic, and onion in a food processor. Pulse until the mixture is finely ground. Heat a skillet with olive oil spray over high heat and cook the mushroom mixture until very soft, about 5-7 minutes.

Transfer the mixture into a mixing bowl. Add the ground turkey, salt and pepper to the bowl and mix all together until very well combined. Roll into ball and flatten into a thick burger patty. Wipe the skillet clean with a paper towel, then spray a coating of olive oil to the middle of it. Heat the pan to medium-high heat and lay the burger on top of the heated oil spot. Cook for about 4-5 minutes (or until nicely browned). Lift the burger out of the skillet and give another quick spray of olive oil to the center of the skillet. Flip the burger back into the pan and continue cooking for 4-5 minutes more. If using cheddar cheese, place cheese slice on patty near the end of its cooking time. Assemble burger with all other fix-ins.
